Chapter 25

Reckker shook his head. “Crewcut? You mean that guy who was sitting on the couch and reading the book in that goofy named office?”

“Yeah, Zella-Nomics. Shit, I don’t want him recognizing the two of us together. He’ll pick up on the fact that we were checking them out. Let’s just sit here and try to keep a low profile. God, what are the odds? All the restaurants in town, and that guy ends up in the same place as us.”

“There has to be a back door out of this place.”

“Yeah, I guess we can go out that way and walk up the alley and around the block.” I looked over, caught the eye of the waitress, and gave a signal I wanted the bill. She nodded and headed toward the bar.

Reckker had suddenly picked up speed as he stuffed fries into his mouth using both hands.

“Relax, man, you can finish your lunch. I just don’t want to walk past that guy and take the chance he’ll remember us.”

The waitress arrived with the bill a few minutes later. I paid in cash and left it on the table. “Let’s see if we can make it out the back without drawing any attention,” I said, and we calmly stood and made our way toward the rear door that led to the patio in back. We had almost made it when a voice roared, “Well, if it isn’t the king of crime himself, Dev Haskell. How’s it going, your Highness?”

I shot a quick glance over at a table with three guys. One of them, the guy with the roaring voice, had a full beard, salt and pepper hair pulled back in a ponytail, and looked like he could bench press five hundred pounds without any trouble, Bill Grappe. We’d met in the army and stayed in touch.

He grinned, raised a beer mug toward me, and half-shouted, “Long time no see.” He’d always been loud, and he was a good friend. But just about everyone in the place was looking over in our direction to see what the noise was all about. Unfortunately, that included Arthur Petters, the crew cut guy, who now was staring at Reckker and me and clearly making a mental note that he had seen the two of us somewhere before. He was probably just trying to remember where.

“Hey, Billy, nice to see you,” I said and hurried around the table so that my back was to Petters, seated in the booth on the far wall. I gave Reckker a nod toward the back door and said, “I’ll catch you outside,” hoping Petters hadn’t put the two of us together.

I chatted with Billy for all of sixty seconds and told him I had to get going to a meeting.

“They discussing how much time you’re going to serve after your last arrest?” he joked which started the other two guys at the table laughing once more.

“No, but I get to choose which facility I’ll be incarcerated in,” I replied.

“You stay safe, Haskell.
